Hey Nerdarchists out there, Nerdarchist Ted here and it is time for yet another installment of for D&D 5e. We did a video in our D&D Monsters series and talked about the Kenku. I was inspired to figure out what they would have to be as a playable race. The Monster manual breaks it down pretty easy for you as to who they are and what they can do so here goes my take on them. Dungeons and Dragons Custom RaceKenku are a race of flightless bird men. Their faces resemble that of a crow or raven and they have talons on their feet but any similarity to birds ends there.

Though they have feathers on their torso they have bare arms and legs. Typically they wear ill fitting clothing to hide their identity and conceal what is on them. It makes them better thieves and vagabonds. The most bizarre thing about the Kenku is that their method of communication is unlike any other. Their unique genetic makeup allows them to copy exactly things they have heard before. They have no ability to speak a word they have never heard and when they say it, it must be in the voice of who said it to them. They might be able to understand the written word but if they have never heard it spoken they have no ability to say it. Additionally because of their unique vocal mimicry they have added sounds into their normal dialog, making a conversation with one hard to follow at times. The longer one would travel with a kenku the easier it would be to understand the message they are trying to portray.

Here is how I see the racial breakdown of playing a them in 5th edition. Kenku TraitsAbility Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and your Intelligence score by 1.Age. Kenku age much like humans reaching adulthood in late teens and if not killed for its crimes can live to old age around 80 years.Alignment.

Most Kenku are driven by greed so do not care about laws but are not sadisticly evil. They lean towards chaotic neutral. Player character Kenku may be of any alignment.Size. Kenku stand around 5 feet tall and average around 110 pounds. Your size is Medium.Speed. Your base walking speed is 30.Greedy. You gain proficiency in the Deception skill.Ambusher.

Our second Custom Races and Racial Feats PDF includes player stats for Banshrae, Dark One, Gargoyle, Ghost, and Unicorn. A lot of work went into this one, and it is also the last CRaRF PDF to use monsters from the first Monster Manual. Any future PDFs will utilize creatures from the Monster Manual 2. This is the first time this PDF has been posted here.

You gain advantage on any attack in a round in which your opponent has not acted yet.Vocal Mimicry. You can copy any sound exactly as you have heard it. When you repeat it is in the voice you have heard.

A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 14 Wisdom (Insight) check.Languages. You can read, and write Auran and Common, but are only able to speak via the use of your Vocal Mimicry trait. So there you are, my take on this. More back story on how cool this race is in your Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual page 194. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Are they too weak too powerful? Regardless of our opinion you know the phrase, “Until next time – Stay Nerdy!!”Related articles.
