How to make a bass drum lift

Originally posted by fatmike5right now, i have a pearl set (i don't know what series or anything like that) with an average size bass drum. Can anyone give me pointers on how to make my bass drum sound better?' Sounds too crappy' This made me laugh, so thanx for that. How old are the heads?

If you bought it used or you've had it for a long time, I'd at least change the batter head. I've been very happy with my choice of Evans EQ2 batter head and EQ1 resonant head. Deep punchy sound is what I get when I tune the batter head just past the wrinkle point and the res head a bit higher than that. And it doesn't even come close to sounding 'too crappy'. I use Evans EQ1 on batter and Coated Ambassador reso (actually, I just like white bass drum heads). 5' offset port on the resonant head. Tune the batter past wrinkles, maybe a 1/4 or 1/2 turn.

Resonant head 3 or 4 pitches above that. No muffling, just a great, punchy kick. What I've learned is being patient is key when tuning any drum. Make turns in very small increments, even 1/8 or 1/16 turns, and the sound changes sometimes dramatically. So, take your time, it make take an hour or more to get your kick to sound right. Also, from time to time, have someone play the kick while you stand in front of it. When you're behind the kit, you're really only hearing the batter head.Good Luck!

Both heads with the same tension. For a real bassy sound you should use a resonant head WITHOUT a b.

The drum samples of choice when making trap music are usually originating from the good old Roland TR-808 Drum Machine. Moreover, one of the distinct characteristics of the, right now very popular, Trap music genre is without any doubt that boomy bass sound with lots of low-end frequencies. When working with groups, it is very useful to have a wide range of timbres available, that the group might behave somewhat like a band or orchestra. Its very helpful to have a 'Mama' drum of some sort, holding down the bottom so the other instruments can float around and experiment.

So that's good. If your bass drum gives to much overtones buy a mufflering. This is the best way to damp a bassdrum withhout losing bassresponse. This way a 20x16' bass sound very low too. I recorded mine, calculated bassdrum frequency was around 60Hz. You don't need a double plied head, with a single plied head you can get a lot of pure boomy bass sound as well. Doens't make really much difference. An even more simple way is buying a bassdrum head with a dampening ring inside it. I bought an Evans EQ3 for my bassdrum, EQ3's have these rings.

Now I don't use anything in or on my bassdrum. What do I get, the deepest basssound possible with this bassdrum. When you're behind the kit, you're really only hearing the batter head. Not in small rooms. I second what agogobill said! Pwerstroke 3, with the falam patch or really any impact pad, no pillow or just maybe a remo Muff'l ring or SMALL pillow, with a solid resonant head.

Tuned both heads as tight as possible without losing the deepness and low sound. Possibly, have a relatively loose batter with a relatively tight resonant. With no muffling you will have an instand SUPER BASS DRUM. Too much sound for me personally. I use the powerstroke/remo muff'l/ebony 8' hole combo, and powerstroke/muffl/big pillow/thick resonant head combo. Personally i like the closed BD more.

Better thump. Originally posted by Mopzillai second what agogobill said!

Better thump.2 solid heads, very little dampening. But why not tune both heads lose? I think Yokozuna has the idea. NO hole in the resonant head.

Changing heads will do the most for you. A heavier head can generally be tuned lower without the papery sound.I still use a small pillow in my kicks. Not a bed pillow! Get a Pacific or DW or Evans pillow. These aren't filled to capacity. They allow a better flexibility in the pillow. This lets the heads still have a life of their own. There are a number of good heads out there.

The Powerstrokes, the EQ3's are both good heads.Hope this helps. Originally posted by moyerbrosI think Yokozuna has the idea.

The Powerstrokes, the EQ3's are both good heads.Hope this helps.A mufflering is the best way to let the heads have a life of their own. A build in mufflering is the easy'est and best way to prevent overtones and only get a deep base sound. So check:- Both bassdrumheads without hole.- Both with the same tension- Both bassdrumheads tuned low- Use a mufflering, or a build-in mufflering. Best way to keep bassresponse and get rid of overtones.- Use a small patch on your batterhead for longer live ensurance of your batter head. But keep it small (like 2 inches diameter), otherwise it will dampen bassresponse to much.Note: If you don't like a long bassdrum-sustain, use a very small pillow for dampening.

Sure you could have looser heads, but why not keep them tighter without loosing low end sound? Then you will have better beater bounce and BD response, making for faster double BD pedal rolls and tricks. It seems to be a bit better and more powerful when the head is not loose. If it is too tight that is bad, but just a tad tight, just slightly tighter than the edge of 'loose' whatever. It makes my room shake. I put a pillow in there, i tune the batter head higher, and i get great bounce, great thump, great EQ. A loud BD really cuts thru total isolation headphones.

So quieter is better.
